An interesting novel, unique in the surroundings described and very to the point with the way life, after drastic changes, would be lived. The author was able to take an idea and mold it into a story that grew as he wrote. He was able to build upon different types of collapses, environmental and physiological that created a future world that feels downright miserable but is the basis of hope for the characters in the story itself.
I enjoyed the story, but felt that there were so many descriptions going on at times that it became a bit over described and instead of the reader being able to picture what was going on, the ideas became to muddled to visualize. There are also some things going on in the story that just didn't seem to fit together like they should. I will also say, I am not a fan of the covers and covers can do so much for a book. The look of the character on the cover would not draw me to pick this book up at the store nor online, That is a serious drawback for the marketing of this series.
Regina Shen is a tough cookie. She may not necessarily want to be at all times but circumstances have made her as such. Like a typical teen, she wants some answers and with so many questions going unanswered for her and a woman who treats her more like a person than her own mother does, she's done with the smokescreens. On top of that, her DNA has some interesting attributes that could be the answer to the fertility issues that have arisen.
A YA story that will attract an audience of readers of all ages. This is not a wishy washy dystopian story, but one of courage and determination.
