Interview with Jen Wylie, author of Broken Promise (The Broken Ones #3)

"But he left, and he'd promised he wouldn't." Unable to keep still, she crossed her arms and let her feet wander.
Garen watched her pace for a few moments and then sat, crossing his legs. "Sometimes, we can't always keep our promises."

A big welcome to author Jen Wylie!  Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I've been writing since public school just because I enjoyed it and getting the stories out of my head.  It was my parents who encouraged me to try to get one of my books published and I actually listened. J

How long does it take you to write a book?

Depending on the book, how many other projects I have going on, and what's happening in real life, about 9mos-1 year.

Writing a series, how hard is it to stay true to the characters from Book One to The End?

I don't have a problem with this, since the majority of them grow in some way or another- and I keep notes.

With a series, how do you decide when the story will be completed?

I saw that you had originally thought the Broken Ones was going to be trilogy, but are definetly going beyond that.

I already know what the end is, it's just the everything in between that has turned out to be longer than I originally thought. Most of my stories I know fairly early what I want the end result to be, except for Tales of Ever… not sure how those will end yet.

What do you think makes a great story?

I think this depends on what kind of story you in the mood for. Personally I like some action, and of course romance. Consequences are important and I though these are fantasy books, I try to keep certain things realistic.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

Normally I write in the evening once the kids are in bed, though if I can get quiet times I will occasionally get some words in when I can. I need the story to be firmly in my head, so I usually don't try to force words out, then I just ramble.

How do you balance family and writing?  On your website I saw that you are engaged to a fellow author, how is he for bouncing ideas and storylines off of?

Family is always first, but they do have a lot of patience with me being on the computer a lot. Being a writer isn't just writing, but editing and marketing and research and so many little things. I don't know what I'd do without Sean! He encourages me and supports everything I do. Yes, he is wonderful for bouncing ideas off.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

General things I do research for (Google). Characters and the story lines just wander into my brain, constantly. I pick the best ones and keep them for books. I also have files and files of story ideas.
Music will often put me in a mood and give me ideas too.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Writing is the fun and easy part. Editing…not so much. Plus there was so much more I had to learn, and am still learning, about the industry.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Hmm I've written a LOT of books, I'm not sure how many. I have 4 novels published and some anthologies. I had a number of short works out, but now have my rights back to them and am trying to decide what to do with them. LOL

Are your characters based on anyone you know?

Not really, some have a few characteristics here and there of people I know.

Do you have a favorite place you love to write?

At my desk in my room.

How hard is it to get published?

Getting published by the Big companies is nearly impossible these days. I spent about a year and half looking for an agent (which you need for the larger pubs to even look at your work). Eventually I gave up on that and looked into small/mid-sized presses. They are wonderful!  DO YOUR RESEARCH. Not only on writing, editing, beta readers, how to write a query and synopsis- but on the companies you sub to as well…some are much better to work with and you want to stay far away from ANY who want your money. You shouldn't pay a penny.

What do your family and friends think about your books?

They like them, I guess? We don't really talk about my books, and most don't read fantasy.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Read. Sleep. Cuddle kids & Sean.

Do you have any suggestions to help aspiring writers better themselves and their craft? If so, what are they?

Do your research. You can find out everything and anything online. Honest! I see so many making simple mistakes and wince. Find out how to make your book the best it can be FIRST. Research subbing your book. Make sure you follow the guidelines. Send your MS in and think they won't care if you have a different genre or high word count? They won't, 'cause you just got an automatic rejection.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I honestly don't remember… I think I changed my mind every 10 minutes.

What are your favorite books and which authors inspire you?

I have too many favorites.

For an aspiring writer what do you feel are certain do's and don’ts for getting their material published?

Do your research. Find forums and groups and get some good advice. Not all advice is good, use common sense and research some more. Don't look for a publisher until the book is complete. Be polite. Cross your fingers J

What are you working on now?

Back and forth between a new Tales of Ever, Broken Kei, and re-releasing Sweet Light.

In one Tweet, describe the book we’re promoting:

Fantasy with a real kick butt female lead who fights her own battles, adventure, mystery, twists & romance.

I suck at tweets… this is why I'm always on facebook J

Five For Fun:
What is your favorite drink? Coffee
What is your favorite cartoon character? Martin the Martian
What is your favorite movie of all time? Princess Bride and recently Guardians of the Galaxy!
What TV shows do you like to watch? I don't watch TV.
What do you like to do for fun or just to relax? Read, sleep, hang out with the kids & Sean.

Thank you again, Jen!
