Paranormal YA Fantasy
For Kaeden Parish, life in Solace has always followed certain rules—everything makes sense, everything can be planned for, and everything is as it seems. Unfortunately, the secret harbored by his gorgeous, albeit guarded girlfriend is about to shatter all of that.
After a successful attack on his life opens his eyes to a world of war, shadows, and supernatural creatures—a world he didn’t plan for—Kaeden finds himself resembling the sort of monster he has always feared. As he desperately struggles to resist a new temptation, danger draws ever nearer, threatening the ones he loves most. A prophecy tells of a final battle and great destruction, and Kaeden must decide which side he is on, a choice that could mean the end of the world. In Book 1 of the Solace Series, P.K. Gallagher pulls readers into a realm where good and evil are at war, and the outcome of it all rests on one young man’s decision to either go and live...or stay and die. This is where the story of Parish begins.
GUEST POST
As an author, what is a
temptation of yours that distracts you and how do you overcome it?
My attention span is not what anyone would call long. I find it difficult to perform any one task for sustained periods of time. It doesn’t even have to be a task: I very much enjoyed Inception and Django, but it took me three sittings to watch each film because I kept getting tired of sitting still. I get distracted by as little as a mark on my bedroom wall, and when I’m writing, this is made all the easier by the fact that I use a laptop where distraction is never more than a few keystrokes away.
I am something of an internet addict—sad, but true. It used to be so bad that I’d suddenly wind up on a Wikipedia page for Nikola Tesla and have no idea how or when I got there. The thing is, you don’t finish novels by Googling Nikola Tesla, and I knew that if I didn’t want to spend another eight years working on a single novel, I was going to have to do something different. I’d like to say that I just powered through and by strength of willpower alone refrained from opening those new browser tabs, but that would be a lie.
What I ended up doing was changing my environment rather than my habits. When I’m in work mode now, I write the old-fashioned way with the old pen and paper, and when I do work on my computer, I remove the Wi-Fi adapter and put it somewhere far from me, usually next to a book with an image on the cover of someone staring out at me reproachfully—you know, for good measure.
You see, I don’t mind loving the internet. I learn so much and get to interact with so many people. It’s simply not a problem that I want to remove, and I’ve found that that can be okay. Sometimes, you just have to remove yourself from the problem instead.
Besides, this new method has actually helped improve my writing. I do preliminary edits for everything I write immediately after writing it. I know this is a bad practice and that you should give your writing some space before doing any kind of revision, but I’m usually too impatient for that. Now, however, since I don’t type up the handwritten parts right away, I end up doing a second preliminary edit as I type, one that is typically more productive because I have had that time away.
