Pendomus (Pendomus Chronicles, #1)
by Carissa Andrews
Release on October 10th, 2013
Genres: Dystopia, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Young Adult
Synopsis:
Humanity has colonized on a tidally locked
planet known as Pendomus, a planet of extremes. Half eternal scorching desert
and half perpetual arctic night. Surviving along the temperate band between the
two, we’ve set up home in a complex known as the Helix. Within the Helix lies
a highly sophisticated, highly technological society functioning solely
on humans fulfilling their life’s purpose. That purpose is determined
and nurtured through a person’s natural aptitudes, as read by their daily brain
scans. Eating, sleeping, even procreation is handled by professionals. These
basic concepts, no longer a part of society’s every day
norm.
Seventeen-year-old Runa Cophem longs to be more than part of the Helix machine. Her life inside is anything but fulfilling. She feels disconnected, and longs to be more than society dictates. Inside, no one socializes, no one interacts in a meaningful way. It’s never set right with Runa. She would love nothing more than to reach out to her family, but not even her own mother can show any semblance of love for her. Instead, Runa has found solace in the ancient woods nearby, despite being strictly forbidden.
Runa’s life takes an unforeseen turn when she’s brutally attacked, and left for dead in those woods near the Helix. Rescued by a stranger with blue hair, she’s immersed into a surprising way humanity has survived. Fueled by a yearning to belong, and an attraction she didn’t even know was possible, Runa wants desperately to make a new life. Yet, there’s much she doesn’t know about herself, about the planet and the forces controlling her from afar.
What she needs is some answers.

GUEST POST
"Do
you feel that humanity will one day find themselves living such a life as in
Pendomus or do you feel that our stubbornness and free will would keep us free
to live, well, free and without such constraints? Would there be a happy medium?"
In a sense, I believe we are already living
in a world quite similar to Pendomus and their exchangeLink (aka eLink). The
execution of the technology isn’t there yet, we’re still a few generations
away, but it’s completely doable. In all honesty, I don’t see humanity fighting
it much. The realm of technology is so enthralling to most, that we lose sight
of what is real and what’s illusion. Take the monolithic Apple, Inc., for
instance. Now, I’m a Mac girl, so don’t get me wrong, but Apple can make nominal
tweaks to an operating system, or to their main design of say, the iPhone, and
people go nuts. When we begin to identify too much with a particular brand or
pattern, we go into a compulsion and can no longer see ourselves ever breaking
away. In that line of thought, if Apple tells you, “Hey! This cool new product
is just like the iPhone, only we implant it inside your brain so you don’t have
to carry anything with you. Have all the information you already seek only a
thought away.”—you better believe people will trample each other to be the
first guinea pigs. Sure, some will remain skeptical, as they were with the
first wave of smart phones. Eventually, the tide will change and there will be
more people with iMasterminds than without. In part, due to the technological
handicap people without them would have. (Yay for peer pressure!) Imagine being
able to look the answer to any question, contact anyone, or find the route to
your destination, simply using your thoughts. Not only that, but to then having
the answers, images, conversations, or details all come directly back to your
mind. No more buttons or touch screens. No more phone that can break or get
lost. Once the majority of people are using this tech, there would no longer be
a reason to talk out loud, since your entire conversations could then be held
mentally. Due to the functionality of our brains this is the very real
possibility technology is heading and also where the inspiration for my eLink
was born.
When
it comes to the other aspects of the world—things like no longer eating foods, having
to sleep, or even managing one’s own lifestyle and career … I believe aspects
of this already take place as well, as sad as that is to say. Again, today’s
reality isn’t quite as extreme, but in a sense, just as real. We like to
believe we have freedoms, yet when you look around, most people don’t exercise
those freedoms. Whether society deems inaction from us, our peers, or even our
own family systems, humans are prone to give in and function only within the
realms they deem doable/acceptable to them. For most, they go through lives
being comfortably numb; never reaching higher or thinking beyond the box
they’ve put themselves in. Is that really freedom? Unfortunately, I do believe
if people were led over generations using micro-steps to alter the current
mindset, people could follow wherever the evildoers were leading. Bury enough
of the truth in the details and people get bored or lazy and won’t follow
through. Don’t believe me? Look up every ingredient in the nearest frozen
dinner and which ones have harmful effects, then get back to me. In Pendomus,
most people don’t have any idea they’re being controlled. Instead, they follow
along within the norms of society and believe they are actually living up to
their higher purpose. It’s only when the illusion is broken, that some begin to
take a closer look at what they
previously held as the truth. ~ Carissa Andrews
