mally biddle

The Tale of Mally Biddle by M.L. LeGette

When Mally Biddle agreed to spy upon the King of Lenzar and his overbearing knights she knew she was heading into danger. She didn't know she'd find a family unlike any other. Posing as a servant in Bosc Castle, Mally serves tea and tends fires for the most dangerous men in the kingdom. Her goal is to learn the truth of what happened sixteen years ago, when the infant princess met her death ... a death that is surrounded by more questions than answers. Along her search for the truth, Mally meets the energized Lita Stump, the strict and matriarchal Meriyal Boyd, and the opinionated Archibald Diggleby. Then of course there are the knights: Leon Gibbs who is slicker than a greased hog, Adrian Bayard, hot tempered and violent, and the worst of the lot: Sir Illius Molick, Captain of the Knights. And then there is Maud, a mysterious woman who just might know everything...

Praise "To say I loved this book is an understatement. Mally is a wonderful character and she encounters so many quirky folks on her assignment. Very well written and engaging story! And an added bonus of a love triangle! I enjoyed it from beginning to end!! I will definitely be looking for more from this author!" ~April Holgate

MY REVIEW

“He wasn’t supposed to remember.”  A good tag line for this book dealing with a new found lifelong love and an accident that could change that outcome.  A very sexy cover that fits well with the tragic event and invites the reader in.  Devour.  That’s what I did with this book from start to finish.
A vampire story dealing with lust, love and all the clichés, this story starts off bumpy but like turbulence in an airplane, eventually settles down and takes you for an exciting trip.  A quick, exciting read, you must first get over some shoddy dialogue in the beginning before you can settle into the story.  Later on I found myself distracted by the lackadaisical attitude of one of the characters but just kind of shelved him until I really needed to feel his character more.
An interesting twist on the vampire mating stories that have sprung up all over the place since the movie which must not be named.  You get a good feel of the attraction of the true mates and feel like a bit of a voyeur at times, but not in a way that would turn you off to the story.  You find yourself cheering them on and thinking that the other characters just need to get over themselves.
I would recommend this to the more mature YA crowd, say 16+, just because of all the innuendos involved.  The story itself does not get graphic, but there’s plenty of steam to go around.  If you like YA style vampire stories, this book is for you.  I believe this is a standalone book, but really hope that the author goes back to it and continues the story of Cassie and Cody.  I would think that Hannah has plenty of rage to do whatever it takes to make their life a bit of a living hell.
Please check out the author’s blog.  She has many book projects in the works and I can’t wait to read them all!  http://www.andreaheltsley.blogspot.com/

I’m beyond a huge fangirl for Shakira, both her English and Spanish music; Jack’s Mannequin comes in a close second.   I have too many favorite authors to list, but Kelley Armstrong and Rachel Vincent are two of them.  I’ve read all their books.

Excerpt

“I have something for you.” He had moved heaven and earth to pull this together.

“You do?” Her eyes glittered in surprise.

“Yup. Close your eyes and hold out your hands.” He couldn’t wait to see what she thought. Libby obeyed. Her dark eyelashes lay against her rosy cheeks. His heart beat in anticipation. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a white plastic bag, then glanced up. Her closed eyes changed to little slits.

“Hey, stop peeking!”

Libby squeezed her eyes closed and laughed. She held out her hands and waited. Peter pulled the slim item out of the bag and placed it in her hands.

“Okay, look.”

She peered at the shiny device and then back at him in disbelief. “You gave me a cell phone?” She stared at the gift. “You gave me a cell phone!” This time she yelled it.

Her excitement touched him. “It seemed like a good idea. You didn’t have a phone number to give me, and I really missed you. It’s gonna get harder to see you. I thought this way we could stay in touch and actually talk whenever we want.”

She closed her hand around the precious phone and turned pensive.

“Is something wrong?” He wondered what could have upset her.

“I don’t know if I should accept this.” She gazed up at him with large doe eyes. He couldn’t believe this. She needed to take the phone.

“We barely know each other, and, well…” Mischief lit her face, and he wondered what she was up to. “We’ve never even kissed.”

Peter paused and took a good look at her. He’d been wondering how to sneak a kiss; she just made it simple.

He tossed the umbrella aside and pulled her close. He let his fingers tangle in her wet hair and lowered his mouth to hers. He kissed her long and slow, taking his sweet time. Cold rain trickled down his neck as he savored each moment. Startled at first, Libby now matched his kiss. He enjoyed each touch of her tender lips.

He slowly pulled away.

“Now can you take the phone?” His forehead rested against hers.

“Yeah, I think so,” she answered in a breathy voice.

“I’d better be sure.” Empowered by their perfect chemistry, he leaned in for more. Her body melted against him. He wrapped his other arm around her and pulled her close.

“Wow,” she whispered, her eyes dark and smoky.

“Haven’t you ever been kissed before?” His eyes searched hers.

“Not like that.”

Review: The Last Hour by Charles Sheehan-Miles + Giveaway

After a very busy weekend, I have for you a review of a book that had me super excited to read.  The Last Hour by Charles Sheehan-Miles contains several of the same characters as his previous books in the Thompson Sisters and intertwines them with care without losing them in the complexity of the stories.  Released April 19th, this contemporary adult novel is a page turner.  A big thank you to the tour organizer AToMR Tours!

Twenty-seven year old Carrie Thompson-Sherman has the life she always wanted: her PhD, a prestigious fellowship, and an amazing husband.

Her life begins to unravel as a jealous colleague puts her fellowship in jeopardy and a haunting secret Ray Sherman carried home from Afghanistan comes to light.

Hounded by a federal investigation and the ensuing media feeding frenzy, Carrie and Ray desperately lean on each other, until a disastrous accident puts both Ray and her sister's lives at risk.

In the last hour, Carrie and Ray will each find themselves faced with a choice.

A choice that will change everything.

MY REVIEW

Oh my, what a read!  I just finished and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all.  It’s hard to say too much without giving spoilers, but I’ll do my best.

The Last Hour is, as put earlier, an adult contemporary novel which incorporates a bit of his other two books involving the Thompson sisters.  Written as a standalone, I do recommend reading Just Remember to Breathe first.  I just feel that the reader would get a bit lost without having read Alexis and Dylan’s story first.  They are not the main characters in this book, but their story helps to tell this story.

The story is told in a way that incorporates both sides of the story being told.  The story covers from the time Carrie and Ray meet and through their time together.  Written in such a way, that it’s not a repeat of the other person, at times their a touch on what the other person saw, thought, or said, but done so well that it’s truly from the other persons perception.  That’s one thing I love about this authors writing, he does it so well and makes it look so easy, but as we all know and have read from other authors, it’s quite an undertaking which usually falls flat.  Flat is not even a term I would use for this novel; riveting, full of range, depth, fresh, creative, these are terms I would and do use for The Last Hour.

As with Mr. Sheehan-Miles other book I have read, Just Remember to Breathe, this book is also a page turner.  I didn’t want to put it down.  I fell asleep reading it, I had to read more as soon as I awoke, I took it with me to read during any spare time that I had.  Worst part of that, I found myself crying while a group of people looked at me crazy, because this book had such an emotional hold on me.

Ray, the main male character, in this book is a military man.  Please, do not let this taint your consideration of reading this book.  This is not a “military” book, but deals with a situation that he found himself in while he was in the Army.  There is so much more to this book than the military aspect, there is a romance, betrayals not just from those he knows, but a betrayal against another.  There is despair, love, hope, loss, emotional cruelty wrapped up in this masterfully written novel.  This is a book for anyone who likes a good contemporary novel without all the graphic sex and romantic conflicts.

I give this book 4 stars and I thank the author for providing me a copy for an honest review.  Why only 4 stars after all the raving I’ve done?  Well, there are a few areas that just seemed to drag a bit more than needed to be.  I found myself a few times thinking, okay, I get the picture, enough already, let’s get the story moving.  Thankfully the author did and I look forward to whatever this author brings to the table next.

Doctor Who

Okay, I was set up for a blog post for today, but I never received the materials.  I was thinking of just taking the day off, but hey, I would feel like I was forgetting something all day!

Today I'm going to show my love to all things Doctor Who.  For those of you who do not know what I'm talking about, well, check the series out on Netflix.  That would be the newer of the series, I've been watching the show almost religiously since 1984.  There were a few years were life took me far away, but I never forgot it.

My first Doctor.  Everyone who's watched the show has their first Doctor.  Mine was the very popular Tom Baker.

Tom Baker in turn introduced me to the Daleks:

Jelly Babies:
Sarah Jane Smith, companion extraordinaire and K9:

Cybermen:

And we can't forget the TARDIS:

TIME AND RELATIVE DIMENSION IN SPACE

AKA It's Bigger on the Inside

The TARDIS is the Doctor's "spacecraft" allowing the Doctor to travel to all ends of the Universe, arriving in the past or future, and having a grand adventure even when on the run from some alien gone amok.

Doctor Who is celebrating it's 50th Anniversary this year.  There have been several different Doctor's, thanks to the Time Lords regeneration skills.

Currently actor Matt Smith is playing the Doctor and doing a fine job at it.  I'm looking forward to Saturday's episode:

Check all this and more out at BBC One

For those of us, like me, who are in America, you can catch Doctor Who on BBC America.
